You Too Have Superpowers!

An excerpt from “The Happiness Formula” chapter: “YOU TOO HAVE SUPERPOWERS”
Our favorite protagonist pops up across all genres of literature, both classic and contemporary, in movies, plays, almost any story around the world for centuries – the HERO. The hero is after some ultimate objective and must encounter and overcome obstacles along the way to achieving this goal. He or she is usually morally good, though that goodness will likely be challenged throughout the story. Heroes’ ability to stay true to themselves despite the trials they must face is what makes them heroic. That and the fact that they are often responsible for saving a bunch of people (or hobbits, or wizards, or space aliens).
While there are many types of heroes, we have a particular affinity for the “reluctant” or the “unlikely” hero because us “mere mortals” can relate better to the character who does not seek glory nor does he try to save the world but he ends up doing both. For example, Spiderman is considered one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes because his character looked like us. Peter Parker, a high school student from Queens, was the regular guy behind Spider-Man’s secret identity, and he dealt with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness.
We all want to be the type of person who may not appear to be a bad-ass and might even take some flak for not flaunting our prowess but, watch out, if you push too far, which usually entails threatening or even hurting another, that is when you will see our power. That is when we will change from Clark Kent to Superman or awkward high schooler to Spiderman or random Home Depot worker to The Equalizer or Security Guard to being Unbreakable.
It’s why we favor the underdog in sports and the more true the story, the better. It is why the story of Daniel Eugene “Rudy” Ruettiger who did whatever it took to become a college football player at the University of Notre Dame resonates so deeply with so many. A poor, working-class immigrant, Francis Quimet, won the US Open in an era when golf was a sport only for the wealthy. The movie “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” tells the story. Our heroes look so much like us. We want them to; we need them to.
We want to believe it is possible for us to overcome the odds stacked against us, real or perceived. We want to believe that we will persevere no matter the adversity because we have the tenacity and fortitude of character to stay the course no matter the cost. We want to be a better version of ourselves. We want to be our own heroes.
This is the goal of “The Happiness Formula.”
Happiness is a temporary state when one seeks it for itself. But abundant peace, joy, love, freedom—happiness—is possible when we accept day after day, month after month, year after year the process of “The Happiness Formula.” If you execute attitudes, actions, and behaviors applicable to each area, you will drive up your happiness quotient. Better yet, you will sustain it!
Ultimately, you are designed to be the master of own life. The Master of the Universe has given you all tools and resources to make that happen, and it is the tri-fold process of:
(1) IQ – seeking knowledge, using your brain, thinking,
(2) EQ – applying insight, behaving according to what you have learned, taking action, and
(3) GQ – trusting God with the results, letting go of the outcome, aligning yourself with those who honor the same process.
Very few people engage in the process to achieve happiness in every area of their life. For those who do, for those who participate in “The Happiness Formula,” sustainable and inexplicable happiness is the only outcome.
I’m excited to walk this journey with you as we as we begin to unveil the practical and research-based information on how to achieve that which we all desire for ourselves and others – to be “happy”. We will discover that happiness is attainable and, better yet, sustainable, as long as one is willing to do the work. In the upcoming months as we get closer to book launch day of my new book “The Happiness Formula”, I’ll be diving into each element in detail.
